Halloween has long been regarded as a day when the dead can come back to earth, and the ancient Celts would light a bonfire and wear costumes to ward off ghosts are roaming. Celtic holiday of Samhain, Hallowmas periods Catholic All Saints 'Day and All Souls' Day and the Roman festival Feralia all affect the modern holiday of Halloween. In the 19th century, Halloween began to lose its religious connotations, the holiday-based children's more secular society. Although the beliefs and superstitions surrounding Halloween may have evolved over the years, as the days grow shorter and nights colder, people can still look forward to parades, costumes and sweet treats to usher in the winter.

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in what is now Ireland, Britain and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. Today marks the end of summer and harvest and early winter, dark and cold, time of year often associated with human death. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it is believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing disruption and damage to crops, Celts thought that the presence of the spirits world making it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For people who are entirely dependent on the volatile nature, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the winter, long and dark.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfire, where people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to Celtic deities.

During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and try to tell their fortune. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

It's been 200 years since Bavaria's Crown Prince Ludwig celebrated his royal wedding with a big public bash that was such a hit it became an annual event, what we now know as "Oktoberfest." It's now considered an important part of Bavarian culture.

Munich's Oktoberfest is now in full swing through October 4th.

Traditionally the festival lasts 16 days, however this year it will be 17, in celebration of the 200th anniversary. The city has also set up a special area with Oktoberfest history as well as a beer tent serving a special brew, the "Jubilee Beer," for which Munich's six normally competing breweries joined forces in a historic beer truce.
What started as a small local festival two decades ago has become a massive international event featuring about a dozen cavernous beer tents, some seating more than 10,000 singing, inebriated people at a time.

An estimated 6 million visitors attend Oktoberfest each year, consuming about 1.6 million gallons of beer and 500,00 chickens at the festival every year.

Contrary to popular belief, THE Oktoberfest festival in Munich begins in late September. This year, the two week festival begins Saturday September 20 and runs through October 5.
The most authentic annual Oktoberfest celebration around here takes place annually at the Brick Store Pub. Saturday October 4 is the date this year and I have heard that up to 5 different Oktoberfest-style biers will be flowing into those 1 liter mugs! Throw in some lederhosen, boot chugging, and delicious wurst & cheeses, this is a can't miss event. Some of the lads pictured above will be pumping up the crowd with German song around Noon, so get there early.

Here in the greater Decatur area, there is a lot of beer hoppenings going on over the next month.

Viva Mexico! Viva la Revolución! Over the next four days Mexico will celebrate the bicentennial of their independence from Spain (the birth of the country) and the centennial anniversary of the revolution (freedom from a thirty year dictatorship and the creation of a new democratic constitution).

Tonight at midnight the Mexican version of the “shot heard around the world” will ring throughout Mexico! In cities and towns throughout the country, a key official will ring a bell and shout the traditional declaration, El Grito de Dolores, and of course, mass revelry will ensue until the wee hours of the morning kicking off the actual holiday: La Independencia de México observed on September 16th.

El Grito de Dolores (The Cry of Dolores) was the battle cry of the Mexican War of Independence; proclaimed September 16th, 1810 by the priest of the people, Miguel Hidalgo in the small town of Dolores. Hidalgo ordered the church bells to be rung and gathered his congregation; he addressed the people in front of his church, encouraging them to revolt against the Spanish-- to take back their country, their land and their beloved Virgin de Guadalupe.

This year is especially festive, as both barrels are locked and loaded. One hundred years ago, the Mexican Revolution began on November 20th with troops of campesinos crying out for "¡Tierra y Libertad!" (Land and Freedom!). Dictator Diaz was successfully overthrown and characters like Francisco “Pancho” Villa and Emiliano Zapata were emblazoned in the history books and iconized in taquerías the world over.

The government has been making a big deal of the event: building monuments, marking several routes along highways throughout Mexico that were traveled either during Mexico's War of Independence or the Mexican Revolution, President Calderón will perform the Grito in Mexico City to a crowd of millions, and many more events and fairs for history bufsf and the patriotic. In a show of solidarity and revolutionary fervor, I am going to come tearing into the plaza on my stallion, guns a-blazing!

Two nights of rioting in London's Tottenham neighborhood erupted following protests over the shooting death by police of a local man, Mark Duggan. Police were arresting him when the shooting occurred. Over 170 people were arrested over the two nights of rioting, and fires gutted several stores, buildings, and cars. The disorder spread to other neighborhoods as well, with shops being looted in the chaos. Collected here are images from the rioting and the aftermath.

Sporadic rioting, looting and arson attacks broke out across the length and breadth of London yesterday as the orgy of violence which began in Tottenham at the weekend showed no sign of abating.
From Hackney to Croydon, gangs of teenagers fought running battles with police, making roadblocks from burning cars and ransacking shops.
In Notting Hill, West London, diners eating in the two Michelin star Ledbury restaurant were attacked and mugged at their tables as rioters swept through the area.
Police in Birmingham also established an exclusion zone as large crowds gathered and shop windows were smashed.

The ignition point appears to have been a police shooting, but some are blaming nemployment, insensitive policing and opportunistic looting for the worst violence London has seen in years, The Associated Press reported.

Johnny James Simmons was born in Montgomery, Alabama on November 28, 1986, but was raised in Dallas, Texas. Although living in Los Angeles for only a little over a year, Johnny has already accomplished a surprising body of work.

His first film in Los Angeles was entitled "My Ambition". When casting notices went out, there was a misprint stating that the production was looking for a lead female to play Julie Walters. He contacted the production office in hopes they would have a part for a male and was asked to audition for the lead. Producers cast him on the spot and never bothered to rerun the correct casting notice, which in turn, got him his first manager.

His big break came on only his second feature-film audition, "Evan Almighty", in which he plays Dylan Baxter, opposite Steve Carell and Lauren Graham which he is currently shooting.
